California State Capitol Museum

California's state capital is Sacramento. The capitol building and Capitol Mall in the heart of downtown Sacramento is a beautiful building where the, "past, present and future of California interact with equal force." The capitol building houses the activities of the state government as well as a museum dedicated to the history of California and the lawmaking process. The museum is open weekdays from 7:30 am - 6 pm and weekends from 9 am - 5 pm. Admission is free and tours are available hourly between 9 am - 4 pm.

Ride to Tower Bridge & Old Sacramento Historic District
(1 mile, about 9 minutes)

1. Exit toward 10th Street and ride west onto Capitol Mall
2. Tower Bridge will be in front of you, turn right onto Sacramento River Bike Trail and Old Sacramento Historic District will be on the right

Tower Bridge is a Sacramento icon that spans the Sacramento River linking Sacramento (Sacramento County) with West Sacramento (Yolo County). The bridge is a vertical lift bridge, meaning that it rises up and down to allow boats to pass beneath it. The bridge features a bicycle/pedestrian lane where you can stop and take in a view of the river. The bridge was constructed in 1934-1935 and in 1982 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Matsui Waterfront Park is a beautiful green space with a spectacular architectural feature. Follow the boardwalk over the river to the park's impressive glass and metal building that stands atop a water intake facility. Ride to Cesar Chavez Plaza
(1.4 miles, about 10 minutes)

1. Ride south on Sacramento River Bike Trail
2. After going under the I Street overpass, take the first left to ride onto I Street
3. Make a left and a quick right to stay on I Street
4. Turn right onto 3rd Street
5. Turn left onto J Street
6. Cross 9th Street, Cesar Chavez Plaza will be on the left

Cesar Chavez Plaza is named after the United Farm Worker union founder. The park is landscaped with native plants that create a lush oasis in the middle of the busy city. At the center of the park is sculptural fountain where you can sit, listen to the water, and take in the view. If you visit on a Wednesday morning be sure to stop at the farmer's market!

International World Peace Rose Gardens was incorporated in 1988 for the purpose of creating beautiful rose gardens for peace on public, accessible sites. The Victorian-designed garden in Sacramento sits on .42 acres in State Capitol Park and features about 650 roses in over 140 varieties of colors and fragrances. Walkways lead to a small courtyard with a fountain in the center and a heart-shaped seating wall surrounds an elegant square Peace Pavilion. Numerous benches scattered throughout the garden beckon visitors to sit and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of multi-colored roses amidst an historic ambiance. Additionally, forty-four winning Inspirational Messages of Peace by our youth have been engraved on individual plaques and placed throughout the garden to serve as points of inspiration.

The Historic City Cemetery is one of the oldest existing cemeteries in Sacramento. Since its establishment in 1849, the City Cemetery has become the resting place of many remarkable Californians; demonstrating the diversity of California's history and culture. Adorned with beautiful statues, dramatic markers, and lush gardens, the City Cemetery is an outdoor museum tasked with preserving California history since the Gold Rush era. Keeping with the Victorian era style of its inception, it has been maintained to resemble a Victorian-era garden linking visitors of today with the setting and sentiment of its past.

1. Walk your bicycle toward the north end of the cemetery to Broadway
2. Cross Broadway and ride north on 10th Street
3. Turn left onto W Street
4. Southside Park will be on the right

Southside Park is located in the Southwest corner of Downtown Sacramento, encompassing the 6 city blocks between T and W streets and 6th and 8th streets. The park itself is arranged around a small central lake. The park's playground is space themed, complete with an impressive sculpture of a spaceship resembling an airstream trailer taking off into space! One of Sacramento's many farmer's markets is active here on Sundays at the southern end of the park (at 8th and W Streets).
